Ratio makes stylish, premium coffee machines. So far they have sold more than 5,000 units for prices ranging from $345 – $795, depending on the model.
Ratio’s smart coffee machines remove the need to adjust variables such as water temperature, extraction time, and pour-over pattern. The result is a simple, elegant pour-over style system with the precession of an espresso machine.
Ratio’s sales spike with work-from-home trend
Since the COVID-19 crisis caused the number of people working-from-home to skyrocket, Ratio’s business has accelerated dramatically. For example, their direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales have increased 322% in 2020 compared to 2019 (YTD to August).
Here’s a chart showing Ratio’s quarterly revenue growth.
Ratio plans to expand into Europe this fall, and other international markets in the near future. They also plan to launch a subscription ground coffee service, which could deliver significant recurring revenue from Ratio customers. This service will use environmentally-friendly compostable packaging.
Ratio coffee makers have been featured in numerous national publications, including Wired, GQ, Men’s Health, Goop, and others. Here’s a quote from Wired Magazine’s review of the Ratio Eight, by Daniel Modlin.
“…a coffee maker that could make consistently delicious Chemex-style pour over, staring at me across the room. The Ratio Eight is a pour-over Chemex-style machine with a built-in robot brain that has been programmed to eliminate human error from one of the most difficult brewing techniques out there. It also looks damn good doing it.”
Ratio sells direct-to-consumer, as well as through retail outlets such as Williams and Sonoma, Crate and Barrel, Nordstrom, Huckberry, and Gear Patrol. Ratio has a large and loyal following, with more than 19,000 followers on Instagram, and 12,000 email subscribers. The Ratio Eight and Six both have excellent reviews with an average rating of 4.6/5.0 stars out of hundreds of reviews.
